A Father Is the Servant of the Family

In my previous article It's All in the Attitude I wrote about the importance of a father's attitude regarding his family's spiritual life. In this second installment of "Spiritual Leadership within the Home" I'll speak about how a husband and father is called to be a servant by leading his family in prayer, particularly the rosary. Spiritual Leadership within the Home Part II:

The Rosary Is Spiritual Power

by Brian

In his tape series, "the family-garden of holiness", Fr. John Corapi tells the story of how his great-grandfather would call the family together every evening to pray the Rosary. Whether he knew it or not, Fr. Corapi's great-grandfather was fulfilling his vocation and mission as the spiritual leader of the family.

Love for one's family should not only lead to service, but also awaken a holy desire to see each member of the family obtain the best and highest good. In my opinion wanting the greatest possible good for your family can be summed up in one word: Heaven. As Catholic husbands and fathers, one of the best means to help our families get to Heaven is to lead them in the family Rosary*. In his apostolic letter on the Holy Rosary, Pope John Paul II wrote, "…the Rosary is also, and always has been, a prayer of and for the family."

The Rosary is pure spiritual power. It is the prayer of the Gospel and contains numerous indulgences and heavenly promises. Through the Rosary, Our Lady will shower abundant graces upon your family, keeping them united and strong in the faith. In a society that is waging war against us, it is comforting to know that Heaven has given us a weapon to protect our families.

I am sure that many of you fathers who frequent our website already lead your family in prayer. Nevertheless, it is always good to receive encouragement and be challenged. For those men who are single but called to the married state, I encourage you to not only pray now, but also, once you are married, to make every effort to lead your family in praying the Rosary together.

It is not always easy calling the family together to pray especially when one is not feeling well or is extremely tired. At times like these I try to keep the famous phrase, "a family that prays together stays together" before me. It challenges me to look beyond my tiredness or even illness to see that my responsibility as a husband and father is to get my family to Heaven. This should be the ultimate goal of every husband and father.

* Note: If you are unable to pray the whole rosary, start off slowly by saying a decade a day. Then you can work your way up.
