In my two previous articles on fatherhood I wrote about attitude and prayer. In this article I will focus on a father's responsibility to help with household duties and chores. -Brian

Spiritual Leadership within the Home Part III:

Sharing in Household Duties

by Brian

A father's work day should never end when he comes home from work. Instead it should end when he goes to bed. Of course this is only true if there are no babies or little ones in the house. If there are, his work could continue through the night. Maybe this sounds a bit harsh, but I think it's what God expects from every man He has called to the Sacrament of Matrimony. Fathers are called by God to roll up their sleeves and serve their families by: doing laundry, cleaning the tub, washing the dishes or vacuuming.

There are two important reasons why a father should serve his family by contributing to the upkeep of his household. First, by helping with household tasks a father can witness to the rest of his family. His witness demonstrates that work is good and noble and that no one, especially the head of the family, is above menial work. Second, by offering to the Lord whatever task lies before him, a father is able to add a spiritual dimension to his household work. A brief prayer before he starts his task is a great way for him to store up spiritual riches for himself and family.

It is never easy after a hard day at the office to come home and help vacuum, to wash dishes or the laundry. And yet work, whether it be at the office or within the home, is weaved into the very fabric of fatherhood. As someone once said to me, work is a great means to sanctity and holiness. I totally agree. This is precisely why every father must do his best to help with the upkeep of his household. A father who has a real desire to serve his family by doing ordinary tasks within the home is a man who has not only heard God's call, but responded to it. He is a man who is fulfilling his vocation as a "servant" of the family.

God bless!
