Interview done in 2003.
I first heard about the Catholic artist Keith Roberts shortly after his debut album Deeper came out. I loved the album and I got in touch with Keith to ask him a few questions. He’s not only a talented musician, but a great guy as well. Check out his interview and then go buy his album! See if it inspires you to go deeper! -Bobbi
RoL: Hi, Keith! I love your new album Deeper and am so thankful that you've given us some time out of your busy schedule to get to know you a little better. Have you always been a Catholic? Has your faith always been important in your life or was there a time when it wasn't?
Keith: If you mean was I raised Catholic, then I would say yes but there have definitely been times in my life when I haven't acted like one. My faith has always been important to me but it wasn’t until I was about seventeen or eighteen that I really decided to live for Christ.
RoL: How long have you been in music?
Keith: You know that’s a really good question... I got a guitar when I was seven but I didn’t touch it until I was ten. Then I played drums for a few years and the trumpet for a few years. When I was about seventeen I started to play and write music on the guitar pretty seriously. So I guess I’ve been into music about seven years pretty seriously.
RoL: What prompted you to venture out on your own and record Deeper?
Keith: Whether or not to record this album was one of the hardest decisions I have had to make. After having much success with the group "Chasing 7" and then having that all come crashing down really got me down. It took a lot of prayer and encouragement to get me going again. Ultimately I believe it was God’s will and looking back I can see how His hand worked to get me where I could record another album.
RoL: Which song on the album is your favorite and why?
Keith: I'm not sure if I have a "favorite". They all mean a lot to me but I think that I will always be able to identify with the song "Storms". So much hurt, frustration, and disappointment went into that song. I really feel like part of me is in that song. It was written at a time in my life that was a HUGE turning point, and I think it will always have a special meaning to me.
RoL: You have said in your bio that you've struggled with feelings of failure and worthlessness. I think it’s beautiful how you've been able to turn that over to God and really step out in faith to reach others with your music. What would you say to someone who loves God but doesn't feel worthy enough to serve Him?
Keith: Honestly I would say "get over yourself", in a loving way of course. It’s almost cliché but it is so true that "God doesn’t call the qualified, He qualifies those that He calls." I am a prime example. The important thing is to be obedient to Him and his will. I would encourage them to serve regardless and to know that God loves them so much. I would say that the more they make their service about Jesus and not about them, the better they will feel.
RoL: Where do you find the strength to live each day for God? What helps you out the most?
Keith: I find so much strength in God’s word. Everyday I spend time trying to "listen" to Him. I also find it important to be a part of a community of believers. I could never do it on my own. Also, as a Catholic the one thing that truly gives me the strength to serve is the Eucharist.
RoL: If you could convey one message to your audience what would it be?
Keith: That God’s love is bigger then any sin they could commit and that He wants each one of us to turn to His loving grace.
RoL: Thanks again for talking with us, Keith. God bless you and your ministry. We pray that you reach many souls with the Good News of Christ!
Keith: Thank you very much. Keep up the good work!
