Blessed Elizabeth of the Trinity: Resigned to God's Will

(1880 - 1906)

At the age of twenty-one Elizabeth Catez entered the Carmelite monastery in Dijon, France and took the name Elizabeth of the Trinity. By the age of twenty-six, Elizabeth was called home to inherit her heavenly reward.

Elizabeth's life, though short, in many ways mirrors that of St. Therese of Lisieux, the "Little Flower". Though she never wrote a spiritual biography, like Therese, she did leave behind meditations and a number of letters. However, I believe the way Elizabeth dealt with her illness and impending death can teach us far more than any of her meditations or letters.

Those who took care of Elizabeth, especially during the final month of her life, said that she was never bitter, cynical or depressed during her long illness. In fact, she was just the opposite. They say Elizabeth was cheerful, at peace, and always patient.

I believe Elizabeth's patience, joy and peace came directly from being resigned to God's Will. Elizabeth's resignation was like a channel that Our Lord used to pour graces into her soul, which in turn gave her the strength to unite herself to the suffering Christ and in a spirit of joy accept her illness.

It is never easy to be "resigned" to God's Will, especially when physical suffering is involved. I know whenever I am hurting or sick the last thing that comes to mind is "resignation". Yet Elizabeth, through her example, has shown me that resignation is a gateway to grace and will help me experience peace, joy and patience no matter what sufferings come my way.

"Blessed Elizabeth of the Trinity, pray for us!"
