At the age of 17 Anna Maria Redi entered the Carmelite convent in Florence. She was given the name Teresa Margaret of the Sacred Heart.
Margaret's brief life in Carmel, she died at the age of 23, was one of rapid spiritual progress. While in the convent she was in charge of the infirmary, which meant she had to take care of the sick and infirm members of her community. Her days were long and demanding, leaving her little time for personal prayer. And yet in all her busyness she was able to deepen her relationship with God and reach the heights of holiness.
The majority of us, like Teresa Margaret, are busy. We live in a busy world that presents us with little time for serious prayer and meditation. And yet, this did not hinder Teresa's ability to grow closer to God. How did she do it? She did it by "practicing the presence of God".
This simple method of keeping Jesus close to one's heart throughout the day in the midst of busy activity was Teresa's secret. By directing simple glances and loving words to Jesus and His Most Sacred Heart in the midst of her daily duties and responsibilities, she was able to grow closer to Him and be transformed by His grace and love.
This spiritual method of keeping oneself united to Jesus can be put into practice by anyone. You do not have to be an expert in spirituality nor a born saint. All you need to do is keep Jesus close to your heart, speaking to Him here and there, thinking about Him periodically and He will do the rest.
St. Teresa Margaret of the Sacred Heart is a great witness for those lay people who want to grow in holiness and yet think it's not possible because they have little time to pray. This simple way of keeping yourself united to Jesus is an excellent way to help you grow in sanctity and union with God.
God bless.
