"Oh, I'm just a mom." How often have we said this, or heard other mothers say it when asked the infamous question "So what do you do?" "Just a mom" hardly dignifies one of the most important vocations that God has ever created for human beings to fulfill! Perhaps a more proper response would be, "I am a cooperator with Almighty God in the miracle of creation, an assistant to Jesus Christ in the salvation of the world, a source of unconditional love, jack of all trades, a servant, a teacher, and a complete, bottomless gift of myself spiritually, mentally, physically and emotionally every day for the good of my family." Such a response might call attention to the true dignity of motherhood!
According to Joseph Cardinal Mindszenty "The most important person on earth is a mother. She cannot claim the honor of having built Notre Dame Cathedral. She need not. She has built something more magnificent than any cathedral -- a dwelling for an immortal soul, the tiny perfection of her baby's body. . . Even the angels have not been given such a grace! What is more glorious than this - to be a mother."
Yet in spite of this fact, sometimes being a mother seems like a tedious, thankless job. To be a bearer of life in a culture of death is not a role esteemed by society. Without perspective, a mother can easily find herself discouraged and disheartened. Therefore it is important for every mother to pause and reflect on the value of her vocation and its eternal significance in the sight of Almighty God.
A mother has every reason to rejoice! God values her so much that He chooses to entrust her with the most pure and innocent of His creation. What could be more noble than to receive so beautiful a treasure from the hands of the Lord and be asked to care for this treasure in such a manner that it returns to Him? How dearly Jesus loved His Beloved Mother! In a like manner, how much he must love all mothers and have a special place in His heart for those who sacrifice everything to care for His little ones. Thus may every mother have peace of heart amidst the chaos of life because her work and love each day has the eternal ripple effect of bringing saints to Heaven throughout each generation until the end of time.
