The United States of Europe?

by Brian

I recently finished reading several articles and news stories about the constitution that the European Union (EU) is drafting to unite its member countries under a common law. Though this may sound like a good thing on the surface, the Vatican along with other Christian Churches are concerned about the current draft which does not mention Christianity or God.

The Vatican's concern can be put into two categories. The first category could bear the title "power and authority". The way things look, the EU's constitution will have more power, and take precedence, over national constitutions. For example, if the national constitution of Germany prohibits homosexual unions and the EU's constitution sees such a union as a basic right, then those in Germany who wish to legalize their partnership could do so.

The second category could be entitled "God…God who?" Both the Vatican and other Christian churches are deeply concerned over the fact that the EU constitution neglects to make any reference to Europe's Christian heritage or God. The Pope has even asked those drafting the constitution to acknowledge the role Christianity has played in European history and the influence it has had upon Europe's culture. Whether the Pope's request will be granted or not is uncertain; only time will tell.

Since the constitution is designed to standardize laws and enforce them, Europe may soon see abortion, legalized euthanasia and homosexual unions become a reality. And without any mention of Christianity or God within the constitution, the Church has no point of reference to turn to and therefore will have its hands full in confronting the EU and its laws.

Even though I don't live in Europe, it is apparent that if the EU constitution is passed in its present form - it currently is only a draft - nations will lose their sovereignty and more liberal laws will be put in place. I have read in the news about the old Europe and new Europe. If this constitution represents the new Europe, I pray that the old Europe will return.

Let us pray for our European brothers and sisters and ask Sts. Cyril and Methodius, the Patrons of Europe, to intercede for the European continent and the European Church. Amen.
