Following in the footsteps of Belgium and the Netherlands, Spain is on its way to passing laws that will legalize same sex marriages and grant homosexual couples the right to adopt children.
Spain will most likely be the first major European country to legalize same sex marriages. The country that produced some of the greatest saints - Ignatius Loyola, Teresa of Avila and John of the Cross - is now ready to transform itself into a true secular state.
By legalizing homosexual marriages, the Spanish government is directly attacking the family. The Catechism states in article #2210 - civil authority should consider it a grave duty "to acknowledge the true nature of marriage and the family, to protect and foster them, to safeguard public morality…"
By placing same sex marriages on the same level as heterosexual marriages, the Spanish government is denying the natural law, rejecting the Scriptures, which define homosexual acts as gravely sinful, ignoring the commandments of God and disregarding the teachings of the Catholic Church.
Unfortunately, this does not seem to bother Prime Minister Zapatero and his cabinet. They seem determined, from the reports I have read, to legalize same sex unions and change the definition of marriage.
If Spain passes legislation granting homosexual couples full legal status to marry and adopt children, there is a good chance it will cause a ripple effect throughout Europe. This may open the door for other European countries to adopt similar laws.
The only way to combat what is happening in Spain is to pray. We must pray, pray and pray some more. Prayer can accomplish anything! I would especially recommend the most Holy Rosary and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. They are the most powerful weapons we have to fight the enemy.
I would like to conclude by encouraging all of you to put Spain, especially its government, on your prayer list. I know there are faithful Catholics in that beautiful country who are fighting the culture of death, but they are in need of your spiritual assistance.
God bless.
P.S. Also, include the Canadian parliament in your prayers, like Spain they are on the brink of passing laws that legalize same sex marriages.
