Last month I came across a news article about how a group of people, I like to call them "the freedom fighters of tolerance" (FFT), were able to prevent a devout Catholic, Rocco Buttiglione - Italy's Minister of European Affairs - from holding a position within the European Union (EU). How did they oppose Mr. Buttiglione? They labeled him as "intolerant".
Why did they label him as intolerant? Because he publicly stated that abortion and homosexual unions were sinful and that mothers should stay at home. This led the FFT to act quickly by labeling Mr. Buttiglione as intolerant and forcing him out of the EU government.
What is so ironic about this dizzy affair is that those who labeled Mr. Buttiglione as "intolerant" are no more tolerant than the next person. The achilles heel of the FFT is their blindness. They are so rapt up in their agenda of making sure that people are tolerant that they are blinded by this and cannot see their own intolerance.
Before entering the seminary years ago I had to go through a series of interviews. There is one interview I will never forget. The priest/professor who was interviewing me had discovered that I watched EWTN frequently. He went off about how EWTN was narrow minded and intolerant and could not believe how anyone who felt called to the priesthood could tune into such a station.
This episode with the priest helped me realize that those who are fighting against so-called intolerant people live on a one way street. If you agree with their views and opinions then you are as tolerant as they are and you get a thumbs up. But if you disagree with them, watch out. You will be labeled as intolerant, just like Mr. Buttiglione.
The FFT is dangerous. They mask their own personal agenda and views behind their commitment to fight for tolerance. They have penetrated all spheres of society, including the Catholic Church. How can we combat the FFT? By unmasking their agenda and challenging them with loads of questions. What they rely on is silence. What they fear is exposure and resistance.
For too long, too many good Christians have acquiesced to the FFT's brand of tolerance. This has helped the FFT shape our society and culture. As Catholic Christians we are called to restore our culture and bring it under the headship of Christ. One way of doing this is by confronting the FFT and forcing them to show their true colors and their real agenda. Deus le vult!
God bless!
