The Power of an Incarnational Life:

by Andy McNutt

I spoke with someone yesterday about faith-sharing and apologetics. While I agree that apologetics and logic are wonderful evangelism tools, I would not say they are the best tools to use every time. As much as I like to debate and teach (or lecture), I have come to realize that unless a person is seeking truth with humility of mind and spirit, no amount of rhetoric is going to change them. There is a time in which debate with a hardheaded opponent may be warranted, but I have yet to see someone argued into the Kingdom. It seems to be more of a tilling tool, to break up the hard "ground" of a mind convinced it has all the right answers and cannot be taught. Good dialogue and logic can break that up by pointing out inconsistencies and contradictions in the opposing argument. This must be done in a manner of respect and charity. No headhunting allowed.

What I think does the most good for evangelization is a life transformed by Jesus Christ. If you are in Christ then you ARE a new creature. There has been a change in your life and there will continue to be changes as Christ transforms you by his Grace. This incarnational life (having the truth of God so "in" you that your entire life is changed as a result, not just your mind) is so crucial. Remember that faith is not merely cerebral. This is a mistake that many people make, but the Church has taught clearly for centuries that it cannot be separated from obedience. You live what you really believe. Not only do we abide in Christ as He commanded us, but we also act as a light to those around us. They see the changes in us. They see our relationship with Jesus Christ and our holiness as it grows. They notice that the pride they once saw is slowly going away and is being replaced by GENUINE humility and love. That life speaks volumes to our friends and family. That is the "salt" that makes them thirsty to know more, thus becoming a door for sharing the truth we hold as Catholics.

I learned a principle early in my youth & education ministry: people want to see the truth before you teach it. They could care less about how smart you are and how sound are your arguments unless they see the transforming grace of God in your life. You must win the right to be heard. Sometimes that takes a long time, especially if people remember the old you. But stick with it and be real. People are looking for the real thing (especially postmodern generations like mine) and they should see real Christianity in you. The results are worth it. The Holy Spirit draws people to Christ, we gain new brothers and sisters in the Lord, and God is glorified in the process. Live the Gospel and point to its focus, Jesus Christ.
