The other day while visiting Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, I overheard parts of a conversation two women were having in the sacristy. Their conversion was not about Jesus, the Church or the Pope. Instead, it was about the upcoming presidential election and the candidates running for the presidency.
Their conversation was heated and lively. Both women used phrases such as "God, save us!" and "God, help us!" They did not argue as far as I could tell but seemed to be in total agreement with one another about which political candidate they thought would lead America to the promised land.
After leaving the Church and heading back to work I had a few moments to reflect upon what I overheard. What impressed me most about these two women was their passion for the candidate they felt was best suited to lead our country. This led me to ask the question, "What am I passionate about?"
I remember reading a story about a journalist who once asked the late Joe Strummer, front man for the Clash, whether the band members were politicians or musicians. To answer this question Joe decided to carefully listen to the band members' conversations, what they watched on television, read and listened to. At the end of his observations he concluded that they as a band were musicians and not politicians.
Joe Strummer's method of answering the journalist's question is a great way for you and me to see where our passions lie. By observing ourselves for a few days and taking inventory of our conversations, what we watch on television, listen to and read we can quickly discover how high or low Jesus rates on our passion scale.
God bless.
