One of the greatest symbols of Our Lord's love for mankind is His Sacred Heart.
When Our Lord and Savior appeared to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, He showed her His Sacred Heart. She described His Heart as "surrounded and consumed by flames, with a cross on top of it and its own sacred wound." St. Margaret also said that it was more "resplendent" than the sun.
I am sure St. Margaret Mary's description of the Sacred Heart never adequately captured its beauty, splendor or majesty. All representations - whether they are drawings, paintings or sculptures - paled in comparison. No artist could ever seize the magnificence of Our Lord's Heart.
Just as artistic representations fail to capture the majesty of Our Lord's Sacred Heart, many people, including Catholics, fail to grasp the personal love Jesus has for each one of them. The greatest, singular purpose of the Sacred Heart is to show humanity that God loves them.
Our Lord could have told St. Margaret Mary many things about love. Instead, He showed her the greatest symbol ever imaginable - a Heart consumed by flames. The Sacred Heart can never be mistaken or misunderstood for anything else but the love Jesus has for us poor sinners.
At times, I find it hard to believe that the love Jesus has for me is infinite and everlasting. I sometimes think, "How could He love a sinner like me? Look what I have done and have failed to do throughout my life?" Jesus does not say anything but opens His chest to show a Heart burning with love for me.
The Sacred Heart is a great gift from Heaven. It is pure reality and beauty. If there is anything people need to know, it is that God loves them. And there is no better way for Our Lord to have expressed His love than through His Most merciful and adorable Heart.
I pray that you will use the month of June to reflect daily upon the Sacred Heart and the love Jesus has for you.
God bless
