On Monday, December 8th the Church celebrates the feast of the Immaculate Conception. This beautiful feast day, also a holy day of obligation, honors Our Lady under one of her most glorious titles.
Whenever I think of Our Lady under the title of the "Immaculate Conception" I always think about Lourdes, St. Bernadette Soubirous and St. Maximilian Kolbe. But from a personal standpoint the title "Immaculate Conception" has led me to reflect upon two themes: love and purity.
I don't think anyone can ever fully comprehend the love Jesus has for his Mother. Jesus did not want to see one speck of sin on her heart or soul and therefore created her immaculate. I can't help but see this reality as the greatest sign of love. What love He had for her! What love Jesus asks His disciples to have for her! "Glory and praise to You Lord Jesus for showing us the great love you have for your Mother".
Second, Our Lady's title challenges me to be pure in thought, word and deed. As Jesus said in the Beatitudes - "blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God"(Mt. 5:8).
Though I am a sinner, I am called to be pure and the more pure I am the more I will see Jesus within me, in others, and in all circumstances. If you want to grow in purity Our Lady is one who can help you.
Love for Our Lady and purity of heart are two great means to holiness. Let us use this beautiful feast day to seek Our Lady's intercession to help and guide us to greater love and purity of heart.
God Bless!
